Schoolyard Enhanced Learning Conference
An Examination of Environmental Education in the 21st Century

The Environmental Education Council of Ohio’s (EECO) 28th Annual Winter Conference will be geared to how environmental literacy and environmental education methodology fit within the context of the 21st Century. Sessions will also examine how the schoolyard and site‐specific locations can provide the venue to enhance learning opportunities for students and the greater community.

Many sessions will be aligned to the state of Ohio Academic Content Standards. CEU and one semester hour of graduate credit $278.00 will be available through Ashland University. For details contact Dr. Herb Broda at hbroda@ashland.edu.

The fee for the entire weekend conference is $145. For members of EECO or CVNPA the fee is $135. The fee includes lodging at Camp Nuhop as well as all meals and materials.

Camp Nuhop is surrounded by The Mohican State Forest, Pleasant Hill Lake and Malabar Farm State Parks. These nearby attractions in combination with Camp Nuhop provide an excellent venue for winter activities like hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and bird watching.

SECO 2011 Professional Development Conference “Call for Presentations” Available

It’s that time of year again! The Science Education Council of Ohio (SECO) has released the Call for Presentations for its 2011 Professional Development Conference in Akron. From February 10-12, 2011, teachers from around the state will be traveling to the John S. Knight Center to experience Ohio’s premier science education professional development event. This year’s conference theme is Remembering the Past – Preparing for the Future and will highlight four strands:

  • Engaging Students to Aspire to STEM Careers
  • Building Excellence in Standard-based Education through Integration, Not the Addition of Technology
  • “Going Green”—What Does that Mean?
  • Transforming Science Teachers into Science Education Leaders

Presentations may be proposed in three formats:

1. Short Courses (Due 7/10/2010 – extended deadline)

In-depth sessions presented during a 5-hour block of time.  All short course presenters are required to sign a release to offer credit from the University of Cincinnati.  Applicants must complete a Proposal Form with a detailed outline and material cost to participant.

2. Poster Session (Due 10/1/2010)

Each presenter may display one cardboard self-supporting panel (3’ X 6’) to display their poster.  Presenters and conference participants are provided the opportunity for an informal discussion of the display or research with a flow of participants throughout the session.

3. Concurrent Sessions (Due 10/1/2010)Sessions focusing on a single topic or program confined to 60 minutes. Types of Concurrent Sessions:

  • Hands-on: A session that provides experiences to participant s utilizing materials or activities and discussion. (Not Lecture)
  • Panel-Discussion: A session led by two or more speakers on a topic of general or specific interest, including a question and answer period.
  • Demonstration: A demonstration of apparatus, a series of experiments, or scientific phenomenon, allowing for limited participation by the audience.
  • Contributed Paper: A 30-minute opportunity to present the results of any research or share an innovative teaching idea.
  • Commercial Workshop: A 60-minute presentation that promotes a product in which the presenter has a financial interest. (For SECO Conference registered Exhibitors only.)
