Great Lakes Science Center Hosts Teacher Open House February 3

On Thursday, Feb. 3, from 5-7 p.m., teachers can get a preview of the new Facing Mars exhibition at a free open house at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland. Participants will explore interactive exhibits about rocket and spacecraft design, surviving in space and finding life on Mars. The evening also includes an OMNIMAX® movie, refreshments and the chance to meet Great Lakes Science Center education staff who can answer field trip questions. Register before Feb. 2 at (216) 621-2400 or e-mail edhelp@glsc.org. The center’s Just for Teachers Web page features additional programs, activities and resources for teachers. General admission to the science center is always free to educators with school identification.

Survey: Teachers Wish Parents Encouraged Children More in Science

A survey of science teachers and parents by NSTA and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals compared their perceptions of parental involvement in encouraging their children in science as well highlight teachers’ and parents’ support of community resources for children to explore science. Results included:

  • 94% of science teachers wish their students’ parents had more opportunities to engage in science with their children.
  • 53% of parents of school-aged children admit that they could use more help to support their child’s interest in science.
  • 77% of teachers say parents don’t feel comfortable talking about science with their children.
  • Half of science teachers say parents don’t have access to materials (52%) or community resources that encourage their children’s interest in science (49%).
  • 78% of parents say it would encourage their child’s interest if they had a place in their community where they could take their children to explore science.
